It was a long cherished desire of the pioneer SDA workers and believers of Kerala to have a hospital of their own. Their dreams materialized when Pr. 0 0 Mattison, and Pr. E L Sorens took special interest for this project and started acquiring funds for the same.
1962- Pr. A Joseph and Pr. P C Mathew undertook the responsibility of finding a suitable place to start the hospital. After meeting Mr. K P S Menon (then Russian Ambassador. a son of Ottapalam), Mr. A G Nair and Mr. E P Madhavan Nair, prominent figures of Ortapalam; 32.9 acres of land on a small hill with rocks, bushes and teakwood trees was purchased from Capt. Rajan Menon in Kanniyampuram:.
1963- 65 The landscaping was done by Pr. L C Charles, Treasurer of Kerala Section and Mr. Muller Isaac from Tamil Nadu. The foundation stone was also laid in the same year by Dr. K C K E Raja, Retired Director General of Health, Govt. of India. Architectural plan was finalized by Mr. R L Watts and Mr. Streeter (Hospital and the staff quarters) in 1964. The construction work began in 1965 under the direction of Pr. Easterbrook and the supervision of Pr. T I Francis and Pr. S. Alayam. The Spicer Memorial College Industrial Department designed and provided the infrastructure, roofing for the hospital. which eventually turned out to be an architectural beauty of the past. The only one of its kind in South India which was later was called as the "American I lospital".
1967- 1969 After the departure of Mr. Eastcrbrook, Mr. R G BeuhIcr completed the hospital structure with few modifications. The 60 bedded hospital was inaugurated by Pr. R H Pierson on November 20, 1969. The first medical missionary team headed by Dr. K A Paulson comprised of Dr. Hepzibah Henry, Dr. C K Kurian and Dr. K A Paulson.
1970 -1985 Later, Dr. Mary Small joined the team along with other doctors; Henry. Ferdinand Samuel, Bhaktharaj, Sudhir Pandit, Selvaraj Muthaiah, Jonathan Raju, Thomas & Ninan C Abraham. The hospital soon attained a reputation for its care and services & was known as CMC Hospital of South Kerala. The foundation stone for Church was laid in 1974 by Dr. It S Lowry, Division President, which greatly helped the hospital family to worship together. The hospital was well known for its OR GYNE Services throughout the Malabar region due to the dedicated team of Dr. Mary Small. Dr S K Subnunaniam & Dr. Sreekrishna Rao.
Chaplaincy Department was opened Pr. Sunny K John. Pr. M U Thomas, Mr. K V George. and Pr, C D Wilson were some of the workers who served our Hospital as Chaplains and catered to the spiritual needs of the patients and their relatives.
The department of surgery work was an epitome with the addition of a team of experts viz: Dr. K P George, Dr. Arputharaj Khore ( a leading Transplant Surgeon in USA), Dr. Boban Thomas (Orthopaedic Surgeon in UK), Dr. John Christo who handled many fatal surgical cases.
The department of Medicene was strengthened with the addition of Dr. Tharakan, Dr. P M Jayaraj. Dr. Thomas Alexander . Thc Paediatric Ward which was opened1991 was a greatly felt need. The addition of Drs. Girija Madhavan, Aruna, George John, Ajni Oommen, Indu Anand; resulted in acquiring the accreditation of Baby Friendly Hospital.
The Orthopaedic work bifurcated from the General Surgery work by 1986. Some of our Orthopaedicians were Dr. Elwin Vedamony, Boban Thomas, Toni and Anand. Dr. Boban Thomas laid a strong foundation for the operation work and internal fixations based on the International Standards. The dental dept grew to a state of the art unit with the services of Dr Alwin Devcraj & Dr. Anuradha S who greatly assisted in soliciting funds & setting up the Department.
